In this post, we’ll talk about how to make ODI team In Dream11, especially for mega contests. We’ve spoken about this in earlier post, but now the fantasy points system has changed. So we have to change our plans too.
Dream11 has made some big changes to how points are given. And not just Dream11, many other fantasy apps have started using similar systems. Dream11 is the biggest app in this space, so others just copy whatever new ideas they try. So if you crack this system on Dream11, it becomes easier to apply the same logic on other platforms too.
So now, even we have to understand and adjust. The new point system started in Feb, right before WPL began. They tested it in WPL and it worked well. A lot of users got more points using this system, but building teams got a bit more tricky too. You can’t just go with the flow anymore; you need to plan and think through every player you pick.
What Changed in the Point System?
Earlier, we used to just pick more bowlers. We thought at least one will get a wicket. If batsmen failed, it didn’t hurt much. But now, we can’t do that. Now we have to pick more batsmen. A good batsman with 40-50 runs gets more points than a bowler with 2 wickets. Also, dot balls by bowlers don’t earn as many points as before, so you can’t rely only on economy rate.
We always picked all-rounders because they earn points with both bat and ball. That part is still the same. But now, focus on batsmen too. You’ll often notice that players who bat in the top 3 and face more deliveries can pile up more fantasy points even if they don’t hit many boundaries.
Let’s break down the full structure for how to make ODI team on Dream11.
1. ODI vs T20: What’s Different?
ODI = 50 overs. T20 = 20 overs.
So, in ODIs:
- Teams use 5 to 7 bowlers.
- 2 bowlers usually bowl 10 full overs.
- Batsmen get more time to settle.
- Game pace is slower, but strategy matters more.
In T20s:
- Bowlers get 2-4 overs only.
- Batsmen have to hit fast.
- Games are shorter, so fewer chances to recover from a mistake.
So team-making strategy must be different too. Always remember, ODI rewards patience and consistency, while T20 rewards quick hitting and instant impact.
Also, check the pitch. If it’s a flat batting pitch, batsmen will smash boundaries. If it’s a bowling pitch, pacers or spinners will trouble batters. Rain-affected matches or day-night games also change how the pitch behaves. A fresh pitch in a day game is not the same as one in a night game.
2. Wicketkeepers: How Many to Pick?
Pick 1 or 2.
Why 2 sometimes? Because many wicketkeepers also bat in the top order (positions 1-4). That means more chances to score runs + wicketkeeping points. It’s like getting bonus points from one player doing two jobs.
Sometimes, the player is only shown as a wicketkeeper on the app, but they don’t even keep wickets in real life. Still, we pick them if they bat top order. In some cases, that player is listed wrongly in the app, so always double-check the playing XI before the match starts.
Wicketkeepers are great VC (Vice Captain) choices too. If your keeper is also the opener or comes at number 3, and has a good strike rate, chances are high he’ll give you big points.

3. Batsmen: Who to Pick and Why?
This part is a bit tricky.
First check:
- Are both teams strong?
- Which team has a better top order?
Openers are risky. If they fail, they might get out for 10-20 runs. But if they click, they can score 100+. It’s a high-risk, high-reward situation.
Middle-order batsmen (positions 3 to 5) are safer. They come in after the openers and try to build the innings slowly. They’re safer picks. Especially if one or two wickets fall early, these players take charge.
Tip: If the batting team is playing first, check who the powerplay bowlers are. If they’re strong and have taken the opener’s wicket often, avoid that opener. Use player battle data for this. These are available on many fantasy tools or sports sites.
If the opener scores well against that bowler, then go ahead and pick him. Also check recent form. If a player has hit back-to-back 50s in the last few matches, that confidence carries forward.
4. All-Rounders: The Real Game-Changers
Pick as many good all-rounders as you can.
Focus on:
- All-rounders who can bowl 8 to 10 overs.
- Middle-order batters.
- Spinners are better (ODI-friendly).
- Those who bowl in powerplay or death overs.
If their form is good, even better. These players give you double points. And in mega contests, a consistent all-rounder can be the difference between finishing in the top 100 or top 10.
Also, avoid part-time bowlers unless they’re guaranteed to bowl. Some players are labeled as all-rounders but hardly bowl.
5. Bowlers: High Risk, Smart Picks
This section is tough now.
A batsman who scores 40+ with a few boundaries gets more points than a bowler with 2 wickets. So unless your bowler is taking 3 or more wickets, batsmen have the edge in this point system.
So what do we do?
Simple rule:
Pick bowlers who bowl in:
- Powerplay
- Death overs
These are the main bowlers. Their 10 overs are usually fixed. This increases their chances to take wickets.
Avoid bowlers whose overs get cut. It means they are not the team’s go-to option. It also means fewer chances to get wickets.
For example:
- Hardik Pandya’s overs get cut sometimes.
- Mohammed Shami lost form, got injured, overs reduced.
Watch live matches. Follow team news. That helps in understanding who will bowl full quota. If someone is returning from injury or didn’t bowl in the last game, stay away from them.
Extra Tips
- Check player stats before adding anyone.
- See recent form.
- Use player battles and pitch reports.
- Don’t pick only famous names. Use logic.
- Read toss updates. Sometimes, teams rest key players after toss. That changes everything.
- Keep a plan B ready. Make 2-3 combinations in advance. Switch fast if needed.
Final ODI Team Structure (Dream11 ODI Mega Contest)
Position | Ideal Picks |
---|---|
Wicketkeepers | 1 to 2 |
Batsmen | 3 to 5 |
All-Rounders | 2 to 3 |
Bowlers | 2 to 4 |
Adjust as per pitch and match conditions. Use this as a base, not a fixed rule. Every match is different, and small changes can make a big impact.
